How to Find Series A Startups by Industry and Role

Find Series A startups and current leaders in a specific role by verifying company category, latest funding stage, title, and source date.

Short Answer

To find Series A startups by industry and role, verify three claims independently: the company fits the industry, its latest publicly disclosed priced round is Series A, and a current first-party source names the person in the requested role. Do not merge those facts into a confident row unless every one has evidence and a verification date.

The Exact Research Prompt

This example was reviewed on August 12, 2026:

Find CMOs at Series A AI startups in the United States. For each result, include the person, company, AI product category, current role source, latest-funding-stage source, funding date, and a short fit note. Exclude companies whose later publicly disclosed round is Series B or beyond. Do not substitute a VP of Marketing or an open CMO job unless it is labeled separately.

The exclusion clauses prevent three common errors:

  1. Calling a company "Series A" forever because it once raised that round
  2. Treating an open CMO role as a current CMO
  3. Expanding CMO into any senior marketing title without telling the reader

What a Strict Verification Pass Looks Like

A narrow prompt often produces a short accepted list and a useful rejection log. These examples show why.

Company / personRole evidenceFunding evidenceDecision as of Aug. 12, 2026
7AI / Nathan Burke7AI identifies Nathan Burke as Chief Marketing OfficerThe same company page announces a $130 million Series AAccept. The company describes an agentic cybersecurity platform, names the CMO, and supports the round on a first-party page.
Vida / Jordan GadapeeVida names Jordan Gadapee as CMOVida announces a $4 million Series A in the same releaseAccept. The first-party announcement supports the AI voice-agent category, role, and funding stage together. Recheck that the role is still current before use.
Levelpath / Michaela DempseyLevelpath names Michaela Dempsey as CMOLevelpath previously announced a $30 million Series A, then announced a $55+ million Series BExclude from a current Series A list. It is a useful false positive because both the role and an old Series A are real.
TENEX / Richard RogersTENEX names Richard Rogers as CMOThe role announcement does not establish Series A as the latest roundHold for more research. Strong role and AI-category evidence are not enough without the requested stage.
H CompanyPublic posting for Global Chief Marketing OfficerA vacancy is not a named current CMO, and the stage needs separate verificationExclude or label as an open-role signal. It answers a different research question.

This is a better outcome than converting every partial match into a lead. Two defensible matches plus a transparent rejection log are more actionable than a list of twenty rows whose criteria drifted during research.

Funding labels are not perfectly standardized, and a large Series A can be bigger than another company's Series C. For this workflow, use an operational rule:

Include a private company only when its latest publicly disclosed priced equity round is explicitly labeled Series A by the company or a reliable funding source.

Then record:

  • Round label
  • Announcement date
  • Amount, when public
  • Source URL
  • Whether a later priced round was found
  • Verification date

Do not use company age, headcount, or total funding as a substitute for the round label.

Verify the Industry Separately

"AI startup" can mean an AI model company, infrastructure provider, application vendor, or ordinary software company with an AI feature. Choose a boundary that fits the research goal.

For example:

  • AI infrastructure: tools for building, running, observing, or securing AI systems
  • AI-native application: the core product depends on AI to deliver its main workflow
  • AI-enabled software: an established software category that includes AI features

Use the company's current product page to classify it, then place the reasoning in a fit note. Do not rely on a directory tag alone.

Verify the Person and Role

Prefer sources in this order:

  1. Company leadership or team page
  2. Company announcement
  3. Current company-authored article or event page naming the executive
  4. Public professional profile
  5. Reputable reporting

Role evidence should be current enough for the intended use. A two-year-old appointment announcement can start the search, but a recent company page is stronger confirmation.

Build a Research Table That Can Be Audited

Use separate columns instead of one opaque fit score:

FieldWhy it matters
CompanyEntity being qualified
PersonNamed role holder
Industry categoryThe researcher's explicit classification
Industry sourceEvidence for the product category
Role sourceEvidence for the person's current title
Latest roundExplicit stage label
Funding source and dateEvidence and freshness
StatusAccept, exclude, or needs research
Fit noteConcise explanation, including uncertainty

This structure makes it possible to refresh one claim without recreating the whole list.

Common Failure Modes

Historical Stage Drift

A company that raised Series A in 2023 may have raised Series B in 2025. Always search for later rounds before accepting it.

Title Inflation

Head of Marketing, VP of Marketing, marketing advisor, and CMO are not interchangeable. Broaden titles only when the brief says to.

Vacant Role Substitution

A company hiring a CMO is a valuable signal, but it is not a result for "CMOs at companies." Put it in a separate open-role list.

Industry Drift

Do not quietly expand AI infrastructure into every company using an LLM. Return adjacent matches in a review section or exclude them.

False Precision

Funding and role information can change between checks. Use verified on dates instead of presenting the table as permanently current.

Where Coherence Fits

The Coherence AI Lead Finder can combine person, company stage, industry, geography, and evidence requirements in one research request. It returns public sources for review rather than presenting a hidden database score as proof.

Coherence does not guarantee private contact data and does not autonomously send email. The research step is for building and verifying a shortlist. Eligible company and people results can then be organized in the workspace after human review.

Verification Checklist

  • The company fits the chosen AI/industry definition.
  • The latest publicly disclosed priced round is Series A.
  • No later Series B or subsequent round was found.
  • A current source names the person in the exact requested role.
  • Funding, role, and industry each have their own source.
  • Every time-sensitive claim has a verification date.
  • Excluded and uncertain rows remain visible to the reviewer.
