A customer asks why their onboarding has stalled. The reply belongs in the support inbox, but the answer depends on a project, a missing document, and a promise made by the account manager. Assigning the email helps. Finding and completing the underlying work is the harder part.

That is where the choice between Coherence and Front becomes useful. Coherence is the better Front alternative when the same team owns customer relationships, support, and delivery work. Front deserves a close look when you want a dedicated customer-service platform alongside systems you already intend to keep.

This comparison comes from Coherence. We reviewed our current product implementation and both products' first-party documentation on September 11, 2026. The recommendations are editorial judgments, not results from a comparative performance test.

What you are actually choosing

Front is broader than a shared email address. Its ticketing product and Knowledge offering connect customer conversations with service workflows and self-service. Its plan comparison also lists a customer portal with ticket forms.

Coherence's distinction is the surrounding workspace. Shared Inbox, Cases, Knowledge, and Portals sit alongside People, Accounts, Tasks, and configurable modules.

Why Coherence can be the better choice

Return to the stalled onboarding. In Coherence, staff can link the conversation to relevant records, open a Case for work that needs tracking, associate the Person and Account, and assign responsibility. A configured related-record tab can keep the relevant Tasks accessible from the Case.

Staff choose when to open a Case, which records to link, and who should own the follow-up. Those decisions carry the work forward in the same workspace, using customer records the business already maintains.

The Cases module also uses the same record conventions as other modules: saved views, a filter builder, import and export permissions, and configurable fields. Module Builder controls the staff Create Form. Core fields remain protected so customization does not remove the structure the Case workflow depends on. See the Cases documentation.

That matters when support is also account management. A small service business can track an implementation issue and the work needed to resolve it without treating the customer as an unrelated contact in every application.

Use one maintained answer in more than one place

An internal document and a customer-facing answer have different responsibilities. Coherence keeps general Collab documents separate from Knowledge articles that have an audience, owner, review date, and publication state.

Published revisions can support a staff reply and appear in an eligible portal. Editing a draft does not immediately replace what readers see. Staff selects sources for Knowledge-backed replies, reviews the suggestion, and sends it through the normal reply controls. AI generation uses the workspace's configured provider.

For portals, you can choose Knowledge bases, require login, and invite existing People with eligible types such as Customer, Vendor, Partner, or Employee. Their portal credentials remain separate from staff access. This is especially useful when the business serves several audiences from the same customer and operational records.

Where Front may suit you better

Front's current plan comparison offers a clear progression in service capabilities: Starter for one channel type, Professional for multiple channel types and more advanced analytics, and Enterprise for additional AI and administration features. Teams selecting for those service-specific requirements should evaluate Front directly.

Coherence's new support features should not be treated as proof of equivalent contact-center coverage. If your requirements depend on a particular social channel, voice workflow, QA process, or advanced service report, demonstrate it before deciding.

There is also a concrete portal boundary: Coherence portals currently use Coherence-hosted addresses. Custom portal domains and subdomains are not supported yet. If that is a launch requirement, it can outweigh the benefit of a connected workspace.

Compare the plans for your actual workflow

Coherence includes these four service features on Pro, Team, and Enterprise. Free and Starter do not include them. Current standard-region pricing lists Pro at $29 per user/month and Team at $79 per user/month; regional pricing and plan limits apply. Check Coherence pricing.

Front lists annual-billing rates of $25 per seat/month for Starter, $65 for Professional, and $105 for Enterprise. AI packaging and channel requirements affect the relevant tier. Check Front pricing for the exact configuration.

The lowest displayed number does not establish the cheaper system. Compare the tools you would retain for customer records, project work, maintained answers, and external access. Count only tools you can actually retire, and include migration effort.

Run one handoff before you move

Use a real, non-sensitive example in each trial:

  1. Receive a shared-inbox question and assign an owner.
  2. Find the customer and the work behind the question.
  3. Record an internal discussion and a customer-facing response.
  4. Track the follow-up work and retrieve a maintained answer.
  5. Check what the customer can see after signing in.

If most of the effort is handling a specialized support queue, Front may be the better investment. If it is reconstructing the customer's situation and getting the rest of the business to act, Coherence has the more relevant advantage. Start with the Shared Inbox walkthrough, then evaluate the complete handoff.
