Channels & DMs
Organize conversations with channels and direct messages
Channels and DMs are the two main ways to communicate in Team Chat.
Public Channels
Public channels are visible to all workspace members. Use them for topics that benefit from broad visibility.
Creating a Public Channel
- Open Chat from the sidebar
- Click the + button next to "Channels"
- Choose Public Channel
- Enter a channel name and optional description
- Click Create
Best Practices
- Use descriptive names like
#sales-updatesor#product-feedback - Add a channel description so members know the purpose
- Pin important messages for easy reference
Private Channels
Private channels are only visible to invited members. Use them for confidential discussions, project-specific work, or smaller team conversations.
Creating a Private Channel
- Open Chat from the sidebar
- Click the + button next to "Channels"
- Choose Private Channel
- Enter a channel name and description
- Add members
- Click Create
Direct Messages
Direct messages are for one-on-one or small group conversations outside of channels.
Starting a DM
- Click the + button next to "Direct Messages" in the chat sidebar
- Select one or more workspace members
- Start typing
Group DMs
Select multiple people when creating a DM to start a group conversation. Group DMs work like private channels but without a name or formal membership.
Channel Settings
Channel creators and admins can manage channel settings:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The display name of the channel |
| Description | A brief summary of the channel's purpose |
| Members | Add or remove members (private channels only) |
Member Management
- Public channels: Any workspace member can join or leave
- Private channels: Only invited members can see and access the channel
- Channel admins: Channel creators can manage members and settings
